Vai attended the Berklee College of Music, afterwards recording a promotional piece for them in which he spoke about auditioning for Frank Zappa at age 20. He was influenced by guitarists including Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Glen Buxton, and jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth. In 1974, he took guitar lessons from guitarist Joe Satriani and played in local bands, one of which was called "The Steve Vais". Vai began playing guitar in 1973, at the age of 13. In 1999 Vai started his own record label Favored Nations, intending to showcase as he describes, ".artists that have attained the highest performance level on their chosen instruments." Vai has been a regular touring member of the G3 Concert Tour which began in 1995. He has also recorded and toured with Public Image Ltd., Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. He began a solo career in 1983, has released eight solo albums and won three Grammy Awards. After starting his career as a music transcriptionist for Frank Zappa, Vai recorded and toured in Zappa's band for two years, from 1980 to 1982. The gear used to record this album was: Ibanez JEM and Universe guitars, Charvel Greenie Meanie, Marshall JCM900 amplifiers, Carvin X-100B amplifier, Boss DS-1 pedals, ADA-MP-1 preamp, Eventide H3000 harmonizer, Lexicon etc. The drum performance was subsequently re-recorded for the album. The track Blue Powder was actually recorded in 1986 as a showcase track for Carvin amplification and given away with Guitar Player magazine in flexi-disc format. (Whitesnake singer David Coverdale has small talking parts on Passion and Warfare.) Vai has many strange recording techniques, and for one of Passion and Warfare's tracks, "For the Love of God", he fasted for ten days and recorded this song on the fourth day of the fast. It was all recorded in 'The Mothership' studio at his home in the Hollywood Hills, a 1,600-square-foot (150 m2) building where his guitar parts for Whitesnake's album Slip of the Tongue were also recorded. It was written based on a series of dream sequences that Vai had when he was younger, and in the guitar music book of the album, Vai sums it up as 'Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc'. Passion and Warfare is a 1990 instrumental album from guitarist Steve Vai. The LP will be shipped in an LP mailer, in a plastic sleeve for protection.
